Job Duties


Interested in building your career in highway maintenance? VDOT Salem District’s Bedford's Residency is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Maintenance Crew Leader with experience in roadway/ roadside maintenance/ construction to serve as a working crew leader for local roadway/roadside maintenance crews. We currently have an opening in the Burnt Chimney Area Headquarters.

The Maintenance Crew Leader works closely with area supervisors to identify maintenance needs, develop schedules, plan work and resources, and execute complex work assignments. Determines and demonstrates proper work site protection techniques and identifies required safety protocols. Performs, trains and leads crew members in performing manual labor, equipment operation, and following environmental requirements and proper safety techniques in roadway and roadside maintenance activities. Monitors operations and ensures work complies to agency standards (such as environmental and safety guidelines), maintains records of work performed, and may serve as a back-up supervisor as needed.

VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and/or traffic incidents.


Minimum Qualifications


• Considerable knowledge of roadway and roadside maintenance and construction materials, practices and procedures.
• Considerable skill in performing manual labor, and operating and maintaining light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used in roadway and roadside maintenance and construction.
• Basic record keeping and computer skills.
• Ability to plan, schedule, and complete complex work assignments. Ability to train and lead the work of others.
• Ability to perform manual labor including frequent lifting up to 50 lbs., and to use hand and power tools.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply work zone safety and traffic control manual guidelines.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to work/lead in inclement weather, accident, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during and after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.


Additional Considerations


• Current CDL
• Experience leading others in diverse and complex roadway and roadside work activities.
• Experience performing /leading emergency operations such as snow removal, storm damage, and accident clean up.
• Experience preparing reports and keeping records; experience performing administrative tasks with computer technology.
• Knowledge of and experience with VDOT maintenance inventory procedures.
• High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.

Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
